After losing the season opener to Hawai’i 4-1 last Friday February 17th, the Oregon Ducks baseball team jumped back on track as they finished their series in Honolulu winning three out of the four games.
The Ducks went on to win their second game in twelve innings after defeating Hawai’i 3-2. Then the next two games Oregon went on to win 14-5 and 12-6, putting up high offensive numbers as junior J.J. Altobelli led the team going 3-6 and 5-6 in the two offensive powered ball games. Altobelli also leads the entire team so far this season with twelve hits and five doubles, and doing it all with a batting average of .400.
Oregon then traveled to Nashville to take on Belmont University. The Ducks once again were lead by their offense putting up their third straight ten plus run game winning 13-4. Led by Ryon Healy who homered and drove in four runs, and Shaun Chase who also homered and drove in three.
Following their fourth straight victory, the Ducks then traveled to face their first ranked opponent in Vanderbilt. The Commodores came into the game ranked 17, however the Ducks fought to take away a 4-2 win led by great pitching from Alex Keudell and Jimmie Sherfy, who held the Commodores offense to only 2 runs.
Up next for the Ducks is the true freshman Jake Reed out of La Mesa, California. Reed is 1-1 on the season so far with a 1.50 ERA (Earned run average). The Ducks will be taking on the Commodores today at 12 P.M. at Hawkins Field in Nashville. This will be the Ducks second game in the three game series which ends tomorrow. Then the Ducks will head back home to Eugene, as they host the Portland Pilots Tuesday, February 28 for their first home game at PK Park of the year.
